Out of Touch and Out of Touch
The purpose of protests is to get feedback and pressure the government into doing what is needed to improve its process. If the government had not responded or changed its course in a positive way, then the protest would be seen as a waste of time and effort.
Recently, we saw Hong Kong citizens protesting against Beijing’s new Party Committee in the city, as the committee was planned by China and supervised by the Communist Party of China, an organization that has no actual connection to the city. The protests led to one-third of all seats being removed, and it created a sea change in Hong Kong politics.
Hong Kong may not be willing to rally around anyone and support anyone other than democracy and human rights, but that is what the protests were about. They tried to represent an idea of social change in the region, and they succeeded.
The city’s government may be out of touch with what the public wants and needs, but the Chinese government (the Party) cannot say the same about the protests in Hong Kong. The country’s Communist Party was just as out of touch with its own people and city when they disregarded the true wishes of the masses in order to control power and further their own goals. The Party’s inability to connect with people has kept them from improving the lives of Chinese citizens.
Hong Kong needs a leader who works towards democracy and improves the lives of people through the development of its own people. It would be just as good as the leader who can go overseas and build bridges and improve relations between Hong Kong and the world
